Georges Le Chevallier: The Painter in Question
“In search of an art form dealing with Postmodern issues, I will create a public exhibition of brightly colored question marks. The juxtaposition of the monochromatic medieval architecture of Saint-Flour with an digitally inspired multi-colored artwork will invite the viewers to consider the relation between themselves, history and their environment” explains Georges le Chevallier, who chose as his studio the abandoned building of Caisse d”Espargne in the town square, and his question marks seems to be full of the energy of this location.
This French, now adopted American artist, met Andre Maigne in Chile: “He told me all about this exhibition, and I immediately accepted in being part of it”.
“France is the land of my father, and being back here represents something very special, in particular in this visually great town, charged with history and traditions. With my banners, I am bringing something modern and colorful to the town … With these question marks, I am literally asking questions. The question mark is the only symbol that forces the viewer to think and look for an answer … Art should be created to ask questions, not to answer them. That is the challenge. Only the false artists are the ones who try to answer questions. Each question mark will be painted completely different in each banner …”
“This surreal situation of a historic building or a monument next to the universal symbol of doubt will provoke the viewer to search for an answer, his or her personal answer.”
